01 · At a glance

Shipping to Japan: what to expect.

Express transit

2 to 4 working days door to door with DHL Express, UPS or FedEx, plus clearance.

Duty on art and antiques

0 %: paintings, sculptures, prints, collectors' items and antiques over 100 years are free in the Japanese tariff for all origins.

Duty on machine parts

0 % under the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement with a statement on origin on the invoice; many lines are free anyway.

Consumption tax

10 % on the customs value plus duty, collected by the carrier. No reduced rate for art or antiques.

Duty-free threshold

Shipments with a customs value of JPY 10,000 or less are free of duty and consumption tax. For personal imports the customs value is currently 60 % of the price, a rule that ends in April 2028.

What you need

Private buyers: nothing. Companies: the 13-digit corporate number as importer ID.

Facts checked October 2026. Rates and thresholds are set by Japanese authorities and can change; your quote states what applies on the day.

02 · What we ship to Japan

From the hammer or the supplier to your door in Japan.

Auction purchases

Paintings, prints, sculptures, porcelain, glass, clocks, watches, coins, books and collectors' items from German auction houses. We collect with your authorisation, photograph the condition and pack each piece for its own risk.

Antiques and furniture

Chests, chairs, mirrors, small furniture and decorative objects up to about 1.3 m and a few hundred kilograms, in made-to-measure wooden crates from our workshop. Larger pieces we route to a specialist forwarder and tell you so in advance.

Spare parts and industrial goods

Machine parts, components, samples and small equipment from German suppliers, collected, consolidated, export-packed and shipped with commercial invoice, packing list and the origin statement where a trade agreement saves you duty.

03 · How it works

Four steps from Germany to Japan.

  1. You write to us

Auction house and lot number, or supplier and order, plus your delivery address in Japan. We reply within one working day with a quote that covers collection, packing, export documents and transport.

  2. We collect

With your authorisation at the auction house, or at the supplier, across northwest Germany. Items are photographed on arrival in Hannover.

  3. We pack and declare

Made-to-measure packing or a wooden crate, export declaration with EU exit confirmation, commercial invoice with the right HS codes for Japanese customs. You pay our invoice after packing, by card or PayPal.

  4. Delivery to your door

DHL Express, UPS or FedEx with tracking, insured on request for the value you name. Import duty and tax are collected by the carrier on arrival; this page tells you what to expect.

04 · Customs and taxes

Importing into Japan: duties, VAT and rules.

General information for buyers and importers, not tax or legal advice. Duties and taxes are assessed by the customs authority of Japan on the day of import and collected by the carrier; we prepare the documents so that assessment goes smoothly. Checked October 2026; sources at the end of this page.

Art, antiques and collectors' items

Japan's tariff lists chapter 97 as free under the general, WTO and EU-EPA rates: paintings and drawings, sculptures, prints, collectors' items and antiques over 100 years pay no customs duty. The only charge is the 10 % consumption tax on the customs value, which the carrier advances and bills you before delivery. Coins and gold are duty-free as well, but taxed.

The JPY 10,000 rule

Duty and consumption tax are waived when the customs value per shipment is JPY 10,000 or less. For personal imports Japan currently values goods at 60 % of the purchase price, so the threshold corresponds to a price of about JPY 16,600. Shipments from the same sender to the same recipient are aggregated. The 2026 tax reform abolishes the 60 % rule from 1 April 2028. Auction purchases are nearly always above the threshold.

Spare parts and industrial goods under the EU-Japan EPA

Industrial tariffs between the EU and Japan are fully eliminated, and many machinery lines are free in any case. Where the EPA rate matters, the invoice must carry the exporter's statement on origin, with a REX number above EUR 6,000; we prepare it with your supplier. Companies import under their 13-digit corporate number; the carrier files the declaration. Shipments up to JPY 200,000 can use the simplified tariff.

German VAT refund

Our export declaration with the EU exit confirmation lets the German auction house or supplier refund the German VAT to you.

Restricted items

Items with ivory, tortoiseshell or other CITES materials need the German CITES export permit and an import approval from METI; without papers Japan Customs only allows return or abandonment, so ask before you bid. Swords and antique firearms need a registration certificate from the prefectural Board of Education and METI import approval; we do not ship weapons or militaria.

05 · Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Is there customs duty on porcelain, paintings or antiques shipped from Germany to Japan?

Antiques over 100 years, paintings, prints and collectors' items are duty-free. Porcelain and glass under 100 years carry the normal tariff rate, which is zero for EU-origin goods with an origin statement, and we check the exact line for you. Consumption tax of 10 % applies to everything.

How long does express from Hannover to Tokyo take?

2 to 4 working days door to door after dispatch, plus clearance.

Do I need an importer number as a private buyer?

No. The carrier clears the shipment with your name, address and phone number. Companies use their corporate number.

Can you ship machine parts from a German supplier to our factory in Japan?

Yes. Duty-free under the EU-Japan EPA with an origin statement on the invoice, 10 % consumption tax, express in 2 to 4 days or air freight for pallets.

What about a Japanese sword or an antique with ivory bought at a German auction?

Both are possible only with papers: CITES permits on both sides for ivory, Board of Education registration and METI approval for swords. We tell you before you bid whether it can be done.

Can I get the German VAT back?

Yes, if the seller agrees to the export procedure. We provide the export declaration with the EU exit confirmation and the seller refunds the German VAT.
