Shipping to the USA: what to expect.

Express transit

1 to 3 working days door to door with DHL Express or UPS, plus customs clearance.

Duty on art and antiques

0 % for paintings, sculptures, prints, collectors' items and antiques over 100 years (HTS chapter 97). Art and antiques are also exempt from the additional Section 301 duties on EU goods.

Duty on machine parts

Normal rate plus the Section 301 surcharge on EU-origin goods, capped at 10 % in total. Steel and aluminium articles follow separate Section 232 rules.

Duty-free threshold

None. The USD 800 de minimis exemption has been suspended since 29 August 2025, so every shipment is declared and the carrier's broker files the entry.

Import VAT

The USA has no federal import VAT. The carrier collects duty and the merchandise processing fee before delivery.

What you need

Private buyers: nothing in advance. The carrier's broker files the entry in your name. Companies: EIN. Formal entries over USD 2,500 are handled by the carrier with a single-entry bond.

Facts checked October 2026. Rates and thresholds are set by US authorities and can change; your quote states what applies on the day.

02 · What we ship to the USA

From the hammer or the supplier to your door in the USA.

Auction purchases

Paintings, prints, sculptures, porcelain, glass, clocks, watches, coins, books and collectors' items from German auction houses. We collect with your authorisation, photograph the condition and pack each piece for its own risk.

Antiques and furniture

Chests, chairs, mirrors, small furniture and decorative objects up to about 1.3 m and a few hundred kilograms, in made-to-measure wooden crates from our workshop. Larger pieces we route to a specialist forwarder and tell you so in advance.

Spare parts and industrial goods

Machine parts, components, samples and small equipment from German suppliers, collected, consolidated, export-packed and shipped with commercial invoice, packing list and the origin statement where a trade agreement saves you duty.

03 · How it works

Four steps from Germany to the USA.

  1. You write to us

Auction house and lot number, or supplier and order, plus your delivery address in the USA. We reply within one working day with a quote that covers collection, packing, export documents and transport.

  2. We collect

With your authorisation at the auction house, or at the supplier, across northwest Germany. Items are photographed on arrival in Hannover.

  3. We pack and declare

Made-to-measure packing or a wooden crate, export declaration with EU exit confirmation, commercial invoice with the right HS codes for US customs. You pay our invoice after packing, by card or PayPal.

  4. Delivery to your door

DHL Express, UPS or FedEx with tracking, insured on request for the value you name. Import duty and tax are collected by the carrier on arrival; this page tells you what to expect.

04 · Customs and taxes

Importing into the USA: duties, VAT and rules.

General information for buyers and importers, not tax or legal advice. Duties and taxes are assessed by the customs authority of the USA on the day of import and collected by the carrier; we prepare the documents so that assessment goes smoothly. Checked October 2026; sources at the end of this page.

Duties on art, antiques and collectors' items

Original paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints (HTS 9701 to 9703), collectors' items such as coins and stamps (9705) and antiques over 100 years (9706) enter the USA duty-free. The US tariff regime for EU goods changed three times in 2026: the IEEPA tariffs were struck down by the Supreme Court in February, a temporary Section 122 surcharge followed, and since 24 July 2026 EU-origin goods carry a Section 301 duty capped at 10 % in total. The whole of chapter 97, from paintings to collectors' items and antiques, is exempt from that duty by heading 9903.05.86 of the US tariff and the CBP list of 23 July 2026. We state the correct HTS code and an antique declaration on the invoice, which is what US Customs looks at.

Duties on spare parts and industrial goods

For machine parts and equipment of EU origin, US Customs applies the normal rate plus the Section 301 surcharge, capped at 10 % in total. Steel, aluminium and copper articles and their derivatives follow the separate Section 232 tiers instead. If your supplier can state the HTS code and material, we put it on the commercial invoice so the entry is filed correctly at the first attempt.

No de minimis: every shipment is declared

The USD 800 duty-free exemption for low-value shipments was suspended for all countries on 29 August 2025 and made indefinite in June 2026. Every parcel from Germany, whatever its value, now needs a customs entry. In practice the carrier's broker files an informal entry up to USD 2,500 and a formal entry above that, and bills you duty and the merchandise processing fee before delivery. There is no federal import VAT in the United States.

German VAT refund

If the auction house or supplier charged German VAT, our export documents (commercial invoice, electronic export declaration with the EU exit confirmation) are what the seller needs to refund it to you. Ask the auction house before you pay whether it works with this procedure; most do.

Restricted items

Elephant ivory cannot be imported commercially; the antique exemption (over 100 years, no repair with ivory after 1973, CITES export document from Germany, entry via a designated antique port) is narrow, so tell us before you bid on anything containing ivory. Other CITES materials such as tortoiseshell or rosewood need CITES papers on both sides. We do not ship weapons or militaria. Alcohol to private individuals depends on state law and most express carriers refuse it.

05 · Questions

Frequently asked questions.

How long does shipping from Germany to the USA take?

Express door to door takes 1 to 3 working days after collection and packing, plus customs clearance on arrival, which is usually same day. Collection and packing in Hannover take a few days depending on the auction house release date.

Do I pay US import duty on a painting or antique bought in Germany?

No. Works of art, collectors' items and antiques over 100 years are duty-free in the USA and are exempt from the additional duties on EU goods. You only pay the merchandise processing fee that the carrier's broker charges with the entry.

Is there still a USD 800 duty-free limit?

No. The de minimis exemption has been suspended since 29 August 2025. Every shipment is declared. For duty-free goods like art that changes little, for machine parts it means duty is charged from the first dollar.

Do I need a customs broker or an importer number?

As a private buyer, no. The carrier's broker files the entry in your name with your address and, for formal entries, your social security number or a CBP-assigned number. Companies use their EIN.

Can you get the German VAT refunded?

We provide the export declaration with the EU exit confirmation and the commercial invoice. With these documents the auction house or supplier refunds the German VAT to you; the refund itself is between you and the seller.

Which carriers do you use to the USA?

DHL Express, UPS and FedEx for parcels and crates up to about 70 kg per piece; for pallets and larger crates we quote air freight door to door. You get the tracking number as soon as the shipment leaves Hannover.
