01 · At a glance

Shipping to South Korea: what to expect.

Express transit

2 to 4 working days door to door with DHL Express, UPS or FedEx, plus clearance.

Duty on art and antiques

Zero duty in Korean customs practice for paintings, sculptures, prints, collectors' items and antiques over 100 years. We confirm the line for your item before you order.

Duty on machine parts

0 % under the EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement with an origin declaration on the invoice (approved-exporter number above EUR 6,000); without it the basic rate, e.g. 8 % on machine-tool parts.

VAT

10 % on the customs value plus duty. Original works of art and genuine antiques over 100 years are generally exempt from import VAT; prints, reproductions and modern design pay the full rate.

Duty-free threshold

Personal-use shipments up to USD 150 are exempt from duty and VAT. Above that the whole value is taxed. Commercial goods are not eligible.

What you need

Private buyers: a personal customs clearance code (PCCC), issued online by Korea Customs, valid for one year since 2026. Companies: business registration number linked to a customs code.

Facts checked October 2026. Rates and thresholds are set by Korean authorities and can change; your quote states what applies on the day.

02 · What we ship to South Korea

From the hammer or the supplier to your door in South Korea.

Auction purchases

Paintings, prints, sculptures, porcelain, glass, clocks, watches, coins, books and collectors' items from German auction houses. We collect with your authorisation, photograph the condition and pack each piece for its own risk.

Antiques and furniture

Chests, chairs, mirrors, small furniture and decorative objects up to about 1.3 m and a few hundred kilograms, in made-to-measure wooden crates from our workshop. Larger pieces we route to a specialist forwarder and tell you so in advance.

Spare parts and industrial goods

Machine parts, components, samples and small equipment from German suppliers, collected, consolidated, export-packed and shipped with commercial invoice, packing list and the origin statement where a trade agreement saves you duty.

03 · How it works

Four steps from Germany to South Korea.

  1. You write to us

Auction house and lot number, or supplier and order, plus your delivery address in South Korea. We reply within one working day with a quote that covers collection, packing, export documents and transport.

  2. We collect

With your authorisation at the auction house, or at the supplier, across northwest Germany. Items are photographed on arrival in Hannover.

  3. We pack and declare

Made-to-measure packing or a wooden crate, export declaration with EU exit confirmation, commercial invoice with the right HS codes for Korean customs. You pay our invoice after packing, by card or PayPal.

  4. Delivery to your door

DHL Express, UPS or FedEx with tracking, insured on request for the value you name. Import duty and tax are collected by the carrier on arrival; this page tells you what to expect.

04 · Customs and taxes

Importing into South Korea: duties, VAT and rules.

General information for buyers and importers, not tax or legal advice. Duties and taxes are assessed by the customs authority of South Korea on the day of import and collected by the carrier; we prepare the documents so that assessment goes smoothly. Checked October 2026; sources at the end of this page.

Art, antiques and collectors' items

In Korean customs practice works of art, collectors' items and antiques over 100 years enter duty-free. VAT of 10 % is charged on the customs value plus duty, with exemptions that matter for auction buyers: original works of art and genuine antiques over 100 years are generally exempt from import VAT under the Value-Added Tax Act, while reproductions, prints and modern design pieces pay the full rate. Korea Customs decides case by case on the basis of the declaration, so we describe the item exactly as the auction catalogue does and confirm the treatment for your item before you order.

The personal customs clearance code

Every private recipient in Korea needs a personal customs clearance code (PCCC, a P followed by 12 digits) for the import declaration, whatever the value. It is issued free of charge through the Korea Customs UNI-PASS portal; foreigners use their alien registration or passport number. Since 2026 the code is valid for one year and must be renewed. The name on the code must match the name on the waybill exactly, and since 2023 the seller's name and the purchase type must be declared as well. We ask for the code with the quote so nothing waits at Incheon.

Spare parts and industrial goods under the EU-Korea FTA

Goods of EU origin enter duty-free under the free trade agreement when the invoice carries the exporter's origin declaration; above EUR 6,000 the exporter needs an approved-exporter number, and EUR.1 certificates are not accepted. Without proof the basic rate applies, for example 8 % on machine-tool parts. We prepare the declaration with your supplier and respect the direct transport rule. Companies import under their business registration number linked to a customs code in UNI-PASS.

German VAT refund

Our export declaration with the EU exit confirmation lets the German auction house or supplier refund the German VAT to you.

Restricted items

Items with ivory or other CITES materials need import permission from the Ministry of Environment and the German CITES export permit. Swords and firearms need a police permit, imitation firearms are banned; we do not ship weapons or militaria. Plants, food and animal products need separate approvals.

05 · Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Do I pay duty on a painting or antique shipped from Germany to Korea?

In Korean customs practice, no. Original works of art and genuine antiques over 100 years are generally also exempt from the 10 % import VAT; prints and reproductions pay VAT on the value plus freight. We confirm the treatment for your item before you order.

What is the PCCC and how do I get one?

The personal customs clearance code is a 13-character code Korea Customs issues free of charge online through UNI-PASS. Every private recipient needs it, and since 2026 it must be renewed yearly. We send you the link with the quote.

How long does express from Germany to Seoul take?

2 to 4 working days door to door after dispatch, plus clearance. A missing or mismatched PCCC is the only thing that regularly delays it.

Is there a duty-free limit?

Personal-use shipments up to USD 150 are exempt from duty and VAT. Auction purchases are usually above that, and then the whole value is taxed.

Can you ship machine parts from a German supplier to our plant in Korea?

Yes. Duty-free under the EU-Korea FTA with an origin declaration on the invoice, 10 % VAT, express in 2 to 4 days or air freight for pallets.

Can I get the German VAT back?

Yes, if the seller agrees to the export procedure. We provide the export declaration with the EU exit confirmation and the seller refunds the German VAT.
